Chris Sutton Calls Van Dijk Best Ever Dutch Premier League Player. Arsenal Fans Respond

Instant hyperbole is, after getting wound up about VAR, possibly the most in vogue thing among modern football fans and pundits alike.

If a player has the audacity to be the subject of an earth shattering bid from a club, they are expected to immediately produce a run of form akin to Ronaldinho, Zidane and Maradona at their peaks, combined, otherwise they’ll be labelled as a fraud, a waste of money and any misplaced pass or poor first touch will be giffed to within an inch of it’s life on social media.

On the flip side of that coin, there is also an innate desire for some fans and pundits to herald a player in a good run of form as the second coming, which is what seems to have happened with Chris Sutton and his view of Virgil van Dijk’s footballing abilities.

Now, don’t get me wrong, the Liverpool defender is a fantastic footballer and is a key reason as to why Jurgen Klopp’s men are neck and neck with Manchester City in the Premier League title race. The Dutchman has brought an assuredness and calm to the Liverpool defence that hasn’t been seen since the days of Sami Hyypia and Stephan Henchoz.

But then Chris Sutton went and claimed that van Dijk is the GREATEST DUTCHMAN TO EVER PLAY IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE and, well, we have some serious questions to ask him.

As do most Arsenal fans on social media:

At least Sutton has given us an excuse to watch Bergkamp videos all day, though. As if we needed much of an excuse to do that anyway.
