Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick has explained the club’s transfer strategy after the Gunners opted against forcing through a late attacking signing before the summer transfer window closed.

The Gunners strengthened Mikel Arteta’s squad with five arrivals, including Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis, while several senior players departed as part of another significant squad reshuffle.
However, Arsenal’s summer business could have looked very different had their pursuit of an elite forward worked out.
The club explored several attacking options, with Vinicius Junior among the biggest names considered. Real Madrid ultimately kept the Brazilian, while Arsenal also looked at players including Malick Fofana and Juventus star Kenan Yildiz.
Julian Alvarez was another possibility, with Arteta speaking to the Atletico Madrid forward. However, the Argentina international reportedly wanted a move to Barcelona, which did not materialise after Atletico blocked the transfer.
Rather than compromise on their preferred profile, Arsenal chose to keep their options open for the January window.
Garlick reveals Arsenal transfer philosophy
Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick has now offered an insight into why the club did not make a late move simply for the sake of adding another attacker.
Speaking to the Men in Blazers YouTube channel, Garlick stressed that Arsenal want to enter negotiations with a clear objective while remaining disciplined throughout the process.
He said:
“Well, I think you need to go in with a clear idea of what you want to achieve and you need to keep your eyes on the prize, but you need to do it in a principled way and try and stick to the principles that you have as a club and we would have as a football leadership team.
“We try and do things sensibly but you want to get the job done. Usually people say in a good negotiation everyone comes out slightly unhappy because that’s the place where they want to be.
“Ultimately we want to have a player at the end of that transaction that’s going to come in and be very, very happy.”
“Maybe it’s their agent that’s not so happy or maybe it’s us that’s not so happy with the agent. But in the end we want a happy player.”
Those comments provide an interesting explanation for Arsenal’s inactivity during the final stages of the window.
Why Arsenal walked away
The Gunners had opportunities to add another forward, but none appears to have reached the point where the club felt a deal made sporting and financial sense.
Arsenal considered Fofana but were unwilling to go all-out for the Belgian, while Yildiz was effectively unavailable after Juventus made it clear they did not want to sell.
Other players were also offered to the north London club, including Eintracht Frankfurt forward Jean-Matteo Bahoya, but Arsenal did not pursue those opportunities.
That restraint could frustrate supporters who wanted to see a marquee attacker arrive, particularly with the club targeting another Premier League title and a strong Champions League campaign.
However, forcing through a signing simply because the transfer deadline was approaching would have gone against the principles outlined by Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick.
January could bring another opportunity
Arsenal’s decision does not necessarily mean their attacking plans have been abandoned.
Instead, the club can reassess the market when the transfer window reopens in January, although opportunities for major deals during the middle of a season are usually more difficult.
The Gunners have already made substantial changes to Arteta’s squad this summer, while the departures of players such as Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard have altered the attacking options available to the manager.
Gabriel Martinelli is also set to join Al-Hilal, subject to the transfer being formally confirmed.

For Arsenal, the priority now appears to be making the squad additions that genuinely fit their plans rather than reacting to the pressure of the transfer deadline.
Garlick’s comments suggest the club would rather wait for the right opportunity than make an expensive compromise.
With January now the next major opportunity to strengthen, Arsenal’s search for another forward could therefore continue into the season.
