Arsenal hand Mikel Arteta major contract boost after historic Premier League triumph

The Arsenal manager has committed his future to the club after agreeing improved terms, with his backroom staff also working towards new contracts.

Mikel Arteta has committed his future to Arsenal by agreeing an improved contract, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The Spaniard’s existing agreement was due to expire in the summer of 2027, having last signed fresh terms in September 2024. His new deal represents another significant step in Arsenal’s plans to build on last season’s Premier League title triumph.

Arteta’s backroom staff are also in the process of renewing their contracts following the club’s first league title in 22 years.

Arteta extends Arsenal commitment

The 44-year-old has been Arsenal manager since December 2019, when he replaced Unai Emery after leaving his position as assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City to take his first senior managerial role.

Arteta inherited an Arsenal side sitting 10th in the Premier League and overseeing a club still in transition following Arsene Wenger’s departure.

He won the FA Cup at the end of his first season, before Arsenal finished eighth in 2020-21 and fifth the following campaign.

In September 2020, Arteta was given the title of first-team manager, having initially been appointed head coach. It marked the first time Arsenal had used that title since Wenger’s departure in 2018.

His subsequent work transformed Arsenal into consistent Premier League challengers. The club mounted an unexpected title challenge in 2022-23 and returned to the Champions League for the first time since 2016-17.

Arsenal then finished second in three consecutive Premier League seasons between 2023 and 2025 before finally going one step further last season.

Their 2025-26 title was confirmed on May 19 after Manchester City drew with Bournemouth.

Arteta has now overseen 360 Arsenal matches and is the longest-serving current manager in England’s top four divisions.

Arsenal wanted Arteta to stay

Following Arsenal’s title triumph, co-chairman Josh Kroenke described keeping Arteta at the club as an “utmost priority”.

Arteta himself said in August that he wanted to remain at Arsenal and that he and the club would “resolve” his contract situation.

The new agreement provides continuity after a season in which Arsenal also reached the Champions League final for only the second time in their history. They were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Building beyond the title

The Athletic’s Arsenal correspondent Art de Roche described the new agreement as a move that could reinforce Arsenal’s ambitions following their league success.

The timing of Arteta’s renewal was not necessarily a concern, given that his previous contract was also renewed relatively close to its expiry date.

Arteta has also continued to adapt his approach throughout his Arsenal tenure, with the club evolving domestically and in Europe.

Arsenal were nominated for the Ballon d’Or’s Best Club award for 2026 following their title-winning campaign, while Arteta has spoken of the ambition to build on that success rather than treat the championship as an endpoint.

The 3-0 defeat to Brighton at the weekend ended Arsenal’s seven-match winning start to the current campaign, but the result came after a run of seven victories in all competitions.

The new contract now gives Arteta and his coaching staff the opportunity to continue the project at a club that has moved from transition to Premier League champions under his leadership.
