Arsenal transfer blow: Fabrizio Romano drops the final verdict on Rodrygo’s January intentions

The rumour mill has been spinning at a dizzying pace, and Gooners everywhere have allowed themselves to dream about a sensational blockbuster move. Arsenal have long admired the Brazilian wizard, with persistent links suggesting a high-profile swoop could be on the horizon.

After all, Mikel Arteta’s side continues to reach new heights, coming off a stunning Premier League title triumph and an unforgettable run to the Champions League final last season.

Naturally, elite ambition demands elite targets. Whispers began to circulate that the Gunners were lining up a January raid to further bolster their attacking arsenal. Reports even indicated that dialogue had opened between the North London club and the player’s representatives.

Yet, before anyone starts printing names on the back of the home shirt, a reality check has been served.

The dream of seeing him grace the Emirates Stadium turf this winter has hit a major roadblock, courtesy of some definitive transfer insider updates.

The recovery grind and the Real Madrid commitment

The primary focus for the 25-year-old winger right now isn’t packing his bags for a flight to Heathrow; it is the gruelling, lonely road back to full physical fitness.

Back in March, a devastating ACL tear against Getafe brought a screeching halt to his progress, derailing what was supposed to be a monumental summer 2026 window.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided an encouraging update on that front, noting that the forward’s rehabilitation is tracking ahead of schedule. While initial medical projections whispered of a February comeback, the mood inside Valdebebas suggests he could be ready to feature for Jose Mourinho’s side by December or January.

Naturally, club officials will not rush a single step of the process, prioritising complete recovery over a hurried return.

Crucially, Romano has poured cold water on any notion that a mid-season exit is on the cards. Addressing the persistent chatter surrounding Arsenal’s admiration, which dates back to previous windows where Manchester City also cast admiring glances, the Italian journalist made the stance crystal clear:

“Now, what I can say is that for sure, the mission for Rodrygo is to return to the pitch. Rodrygo wants to get back on the pitch, get in the best conditions possible… At Arsenal, for sure, he’s a player they wanted, but it was not possible.”

Romano emphasised that January moves simply are not on the agenda, adding:

“Rodrygo will stay. In the summer, it’s way too early to predict anything. What I can guarantee is that Rodrygo is really grateful to Real Madrid for how they are helping him and trusting him and believing in him, despite a difficult moment in terms of injury. And so, at the moment, the situation remains under control.”

Dreaming of North London? Put the chequebook away for now

So, where does this leave Arsenal fans who were hoping for a mid-season marquee injection of flair? In short, holding tight and looking elsewhere.

While the Gunners’ recruitment team undoubtedly rates the South American star, timing is everything in the ruthless world of football transfers. Right now, a January rescue mission is a non-starter.

The player is deeply appreciative of the unwavering support Real Madrid have shown him throughout his nightmare knee injury, forging an unbreakable bond of loyalty during his darkest professional hours.

Of course, football is a funny old game, and summer windows have a habit of rewriting scripts overnight. But as the winter chill sets in over the Emirates, Arteta and sporting director Edu will have to look at alternative targets if they want to add fresh blood to their title-chasing machine.

For now, the winger remains firmly committed to writing his next chapter in the Spanish capital, meaning Gooners will just have to admire his brilliance from afar, at least until the next silly season rolls around!
