Arsenal have secured a significant coup for their academy future, fending off high-profile interest from Liverpool and Nottingham Forest to capture highly rated teenager Phoenix Blayney.
The 15-year-old goalkeeper, widely considered one of the brightest prospects in Northern Irish football, has opted to continue his development in North London after impressing during a successful trial period.
The race to sign the talented stopper was intense, with Liverpool appearing to be the favourites at one stage. The teenager was even spotted at Anfield wearing Liverpool kit following a visit to their training complex.
However, Arsenal’s recruitment team acted decisively, leveraging their reputation for developing elite young talent to sway the decision.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, the youngster’s father, Alan Blayney, confirmed the move, stating, “Everything has been agreed with Arsenal; he just needs to sign the contract.” He added that Arsenal stood out as the “shining light between them all” when evaluating the various offers on the table from Premier League clubs.
The path to professional terms
The deal follows a structured roadmap that has become a hallmark of Arsenal’s recent academy strategy.
Blayney is expected to sign a pre-contract agreement when he officially links up with the Gunners this summer.
This approach mirrors the development plans implemented for fellow prospects Marli Salmon and Max Dowman, both of whom have secured similar arrangements before transitioning to full professional terms upon turning 17.
“When he’s 17, he will sign a professional contract,” Alan Blayney explained regarding the timeline. “It’s done and dusted, and a pre-contract will be signed when the time is right.”
For Blayney, that milestone is set for November 2027, marking the beginning of his professional journey with the club.
Building connections at Hale End
Beyond the tactical and developmental aspects, the move was bolstered by the personal comfort of the player.
Blayney expressed a genuine connection with the Arsenal coaching staff during his trial, feeling immediately at home within the club’s environment.
Furthermore, an existing friendship should make the transition to life in London seamless.
The young goalkeeper is set to reunite with current Arsenal academy recruit and international teammate Daniel McCarron. “Phoenix enjoyed being at Arsenal; he felt a connection there and really likes the coaches,” his father noted.

One of his close friends, Daniel McCarron, has joined the club, and that’s probably one of the reasons, too. He and Daniel play in the same Northern Ireland team.
“With eight caps for the Northern Ireland U17 side already under his belt, Blayney represents an exciting addition to Arsenal’s defensive pipeline.
