Can Max Dowman receive a Premier League title medal with Arsenal?

Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title moved a step closer after their dramatic 2–0 victory over Everton, but the match also raised an intriguing question regarding teenage sensation Max Dowman and his eligibility for a winners’ medal should the Gunners complete their title charge.

The 16-year-old produced a decisive contribution from the bench, helping Mikel Arteta’s side secure a vital three points in the title race. Yet, despite his growing influence in the squad, the rules governing Premier League medals mean Dowman must still meet certain requirements to guarantee recognition if Arsenal are crowned champions.

Introduced in the 74th minute, Dowman played a key role in shifting the momentum of the match. With the contest appearing destined for a stalemate, Arsenal eventually broke through when Viktor Gyokeres scored in the 89th minute.

Dowman then provided the moment that sealed the result. After Everton committed players forward for a late corner, the midfielder raced clear following goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s venture into the Arsenal half, finishing calmly into an empty net. The goal made Dowman the youngest scorer of the Premier League era, further highlighting the remarkable rise of the Hale End academy graduate.

The result, combined with Manchester City’s draw with West Ham United, has given Arsenal a nine-point lead at the top of the table, although Pep Guardiola’s side still hold a game in hand.

    Premier League medal rules

The Premier League allocates 40 medals to the club that finishes the season as champions.

According to the competition’s regulations as relayed by football.london, players who make five or more appearances in the league must automatically receive a medal. These are distributed first before the club decides how to allocate any remaining medals.

Dowman has currently made three Premier League appearances this season. As a result, the young midfielder would need to feature in at least two of Arsenal’s remaining seven league matches to reach the five-game threshold and guarantee a medal through the standard allocation rules.

Even if Dowman does not reach the five-appearance mark, there remains another pathway for him to receive a medal.

Once the mandatory medals are distributed to players meeting the appearance requirement, the title-winning club has the discretion to allocate any remaining medals.

    These are often awarded to:

    • Squad players who did not meet the appearance threshold
    • Members of the coaching staff
    • Key figures behind the scenes at the club

In practice, clubs frequently ensure that young players who have contributed meaningfully during the season are recognised.

Another example within the Arsenal squad is Ethan Nwaneri, who remains eligible despite currently playing on loan at Marseille, having made six Premier League appearances earlier in the campaign.

Busy schedule could provide Dowman opportunities

Dowman may yet reach the five-match requirement naturally. Arsenal face a demanding schedule as they compete across multiple competitions, which could lead to squad rotation in the league.

Arteta has already demonstrated confidence in the teenager, particularly in high-pressure situations.

Before introducing Dowman against Everton, the Arsenal manager delivered a clear message to the young midfielder.

“Go and do your thing and win us the game,” Arteta said after the match, explaining his instructions to Dowman, Gyokeres and Gabriel Martinelli.

The manager later reflected on the moment that sealed the victory.

“It was a great moment, especially the way the goal was built up, and we had like 10–15 seconds to really enjoy it,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

“We knew the goal was about to happen, and it was magical – all the bench and all the players together, jumping off into the crowd. It was a beautiful day.”

Arsenal’s attention now turns to an intense period of fixtures. The Premier League leaders will next prepare for their Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen, followed by a Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

With several competitions still in play, Dowman could continue to feature as Arteta manages his squad through the closing weeks of the campaign.

If Arsenal do complete their title pursuit, the teenager’s memorable contribution against Everton has already ensured his place in one of the defining moments of their season.
