Chelsea agree record £117m Morgan Rogers deal as Arsenal miss out on top summer target

Chelsea have won the race to sign Morgan Rogers after reaching a verbal agreement with Aston Villa on a blockbuster deal worth £117 million, ending Arsenal’s long-standing pursuit of one of the Premier League’s most coveted attacking talents.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Chelsea have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with Aston Villa to sign Morgan Rogers, and the transfer is now entering its final stages before completion.

Chelsea close in on club-record signing

Sources briefed on the negotiations have confirmed that Chelsea and Rogers have already agreed personal terms.

The England international is set to sign a six-year contract until 2032, with the option of an additional 12 months, while his medical has been scheduled for Monday.

Rogers, 23, has chosen Chelsea as his preferred destination despite serious interest from Arsenal, with new head coach Xabi Alonso playing a pivotal role in convincing the player to move to Stamford Bridge.

The deal is expected to become the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history, surpassing the €121 million (£106 million at the time) paid for Enzo Fernandez in January 2023.

It will also eclipse the £116 million British transfer record set earlier this summer when Manchester City signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal unable to land priority target

The Athletic reported in June that Rogers was expected to leave Aston Villa this summer, with Arsenal and Chelsea leading the race for his signature.

Mikel Arteta’s side had identified the versatile attacker as one of their priority additions, believing his ability to operate across multiple attacking positions would significantly strengthen their squad.

However, despite their long-standing admiration, Arsenal have now lost out after Rogers opted to join Chelsea’s ambitious project under Alonso.

The Gunners are expected to continue exploring alternative attacking targets as they seek to reinforce their Premier League-winning squad ahead of the new campaign.

Villa secure huge return on investment

Aston Villa always anticipated that Rogers could leave, but only for a fee comfortably exceeding £100 million.

The Midlands club’s firm negotiating stance has now secured one of the biggest transfer fees in football history.

Rogers only joined Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £7 million, with a further £8 million in add-ons, while Middlesbrough are also set to benefit through a 20 per cent sell-on clause included in that agreement.

The England international signed a new contract until 2030 last November, strengthening Villa’s position throughout negotiations.

Rogers has rapidly developed into one of the Premier League’s standout attacking players.

Across two seasons at Villa Park, he registered 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances, establishing himself as one of the division’s most complete attacking midfielders.

His outstanding 2025-26 campaign produced 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 matches, helping Villa qualify for the Champions League while lifting the Europa League.

The former Manchester City academy graduate has also impressed on the international stage, featuring in all six of England’s World Cup matches.

He started the final group-stage victory over Panama and the semi-final defeat to Argentina, providing the assist for Anthony Gordon’s goal in the last-four clash.

Rogers remains with the England squad ahead of Saturday’s third-place play-off against France before completing his move to Chelsea.
