One of Mikel Arteta’s most important players, Riccardo Calafiori, looks set to continue his time in north London, despite murmurs of a return to Italy.
Arsenal’s defensive superiority over the rest of their domestic and European competition has left them in an incredible position for the remainder of this season.
An important aspect of this has been Mikel Arteta’s squad building. Over the last two years, the club has recruited wisely, prioritising players who are incredibly versatile and physically dominant.
One of the most prominent examples of this is Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian defender has largely been deployed at left-back, with his marauding style allowing him to play across midfield and in attacking areas.
Calafiori remains an integral part of Arsenal’s future
Since arriving from Bologna in 2024, Calafiori has shown why he is widely regarded as a unique talent. Despite battling recurring injury issues, the Italian remains a hugely important part of the way Mikel Arteta sets up his team.
According to Graeme Bailey at TeamTalk, Arsenal have little intention of allowing Riccardo Calafiori to leave this summer despite growing interest from Italy
Reports had surfaced of European interest amid potential uncertainty over Calafiori’s future.
On a recent podcast, the 23-year-old admitted that he would one day like to return to Roma, due to a sense of unfinished business at the club.
However, at present, Calafiori is intent on securing silverware for the Gunners. Speaking before the Leverkusen game, he reflected on Arsenal’s season so far.
“You started so early in the pre-season, and then you work so hard to get to this point, to be in the competition and to be so close to winning. I think it’s a dream to be here.”
Arsenal’s depth continues to fuel their impressive form as run-in heats up
One of many arrivals last summer was Piero Hincapié, who is currently on loan from Tuesday’s Champions League opponent, Bayer Leverkusen.
The Ecuadorian has impressed when called upon, with Calafiori’s fitness struggles this season opening the door for a place in the starting eleven.
The ongoing battle between the two will be intriguing to observe for the remainder of the season, with both players showing a high level of performance.

Speaking on the competition within the squad this year, Calafiori said:
“We are friends, first of all. Obviously, then on the pitch you try to compete to get ahead of them, but we’re all friends, and they’re all really good players, I think.
“Obviously, we love to chat in the dressing room. We love to help each other and when it’s time to go aggressive on the pitch or sometimes just be more chill, just to help your team-mate or the team at the end. Obviously, sometimes we see each other off the pitch and I think that’s important.”
Beyond the left-back position, Arsenal’s depth has rarely been as strong. The additions of Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyökeres and Eberechi Eze in attack have contributed massively to the Gunners’ success so far, and will continue to do so ahead of a crucial week.
