Gary Neville makes Arsenal vs Chelsea prediction and delivers blunt title warning

Gary Neville has backed Arsenal to beat Chelsea in Sunday’s heavyweight Premier League clash, predicting a 2-0 victory for Mikel Arteta’s side at the Emirates Stadium.

The defending champions welcome Xabi Alonso’s high-scoring Chelsea, with both clubs having won their opening two league matches. Arsenal began their title defence with a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City before edging past Aston Villa 1-0, with Bukayo Saka scoring the decisive goal.

Chelsea have also made a perfect start under Alonso, beating Fulham 3-2 before a dramatic 4-3 victory over Brighton.

The early attacking performances have led to suggestions that Chelsea could emerge as serious challengers after finishing 10th last season. Neville, however, has placed the Blues second behind Arsenal in his Premier League title prediction and believes Sunday’s meeting will provide a significant early test.

    Neville predicts Arsenal victory

Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville highlighted the difference between Chelsea and Arsenal’s previous opponents, particularly in the attacking threat Alonso’s side possess.

“I think Arsenal will realise Chelsea have better attacking players than Aston Villa so they’ll have to be alert and alive.”

Neville also praised Villa’s organisation under Unai Emery, arguing that Chelsea remain less disciplined defensively despite their impressive attacking start.

“I think Villa are the most organised team in the league except for Arsenal, I think they’re really well organised and so well drilled by Unai Emery. Chelsea aren’t as well organised as that and they aren’t as disciplined.”

That could give Arsenal more opportunities going forward, although Neville stressed that Arteta’s side will need to remain wary of Chelsea’s attacking quality.

“I think Arsenal will win the game but it’s a really good test for them and a really good moment to see Chelsea in the early days of Xabi Alonso.”

He added that the match could provide a clearer indication of where both teams stand in the developing title race.

“They’ve been so exciting in their first two games but this is the ultimate test for them against the champions who don’t make a lot of mistakes.”

On The Overlap, Neville gave his precise score prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea.

“I think Arsenal are going to be so up for it and strong, they are going to be really aggressive.”

    Neville backs Arsenal in Europe

Arsenal enter the new campaign as Premier League champions and Champions League finalists, having lost last season’s European final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Neville believes Arteta’s strengthened squad can once again compete on both fronts. Arsenal have added Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa during the summer.

“They can definitely have a go in Europe because they did last season and this is a better squad.”

However, the former Manchester United and England defender identified one potential concern: Arsenal’s lack of a proven star striker capable of producing decisive moments in the biggest matches.

“In the tightest moments, in the biggest matches, you just need that something different and special going forward.”

Neville ultimately maintained that Arsenal can challenge for both major trophies, but questioned whether the absence of an elite forward could prove significant.

“I think they needed that star striker, that would have been the final piece of the jigsaw. Whether they can do it without that player is debatable.”

For now, Neville’s prediction is clear: Arsenal to beat Chelsea 2-0, with Sunday’s Emirates showdown expected to offer an early indication of whether Alonso’s impressive Chelsea can genuinely challenge the reigning champions.

    1. ragdoll hit on 8 September 2026 2:45 am

Gary Neville’s perspective on Arsenal vs. Chelsea certainly gives food for thought! It reminds me of the unpredictability we often see—like a “ragdoll hit” in football, where anything can happen in a split second. While his warning is valid, I believe Arsenal has the resilience to surprise us all this season. Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds!
