In the wake of becoming the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer, Max Dowman has dominated the headlines, with many pundits comparing him to some of the game’s greatest players.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have gone from strength to strength in recent weeks, continuing to display the grit and determination that looks set to define their season.
The 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday was significant in and of itself. However, the sensational goal scored by 16-year-old Max Dowman has since defined the media discourse.
Arteta tempers expectations and pushes back on media sensationalism
Too often, young players have been built up, only for them to be brought crashing down under the weight of heavy expectation.
In the days since the Everton game, pundits, journalists and former players have all waxed lyrical about Dowman’s potential. Gary Lineker drew the comparison with Wayne Rooney, Henry Winter pinpointed ‘elements of Kaka’, while John Terry made a bold link to Lionel Messi.
In response to the fanfare, Arteta has made his view on Dowman’s development clear.
“We just need to bring the temperature down and understand what is the best thing for this boy at his age.
“He’s doing something phenomenal, we all know that. Let’s keep it down a little bit and respect his nature to do what he has to do, which I’m sure is going to be something really good.”
In the aftermath of the weekend’s action, Arteta heaped praise on the teenage starlet.
“I think his character, his personality and the fact that he doesn’t seem to be fazed by the pressure or his teammates or the opponent. I’ve seen a lot of players with talent, but at 16, very few that can cope with that level of demand.”
When asked about the potential for Dowman to start games going forward, the Gunners’ boss remained measured in his assessment.
“Calm! Let’s come down to earth today and enjoy the moment because it was intense and it was worth it, and we’ll see tomorrow.”
Thierry Henry admits emotional reaction to Dowman’s moment
Arsenal icon Thierry Henry also weighed in on Saturday’s action. Speaking to Sky Sports, he acknowledged that it was a unique and special moment for Arsenal.
“I had goosebumps, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t often get goosebumps watching the game, but I got goosebumps because I remember my first goal. I remember that level of expectation, and I could relate.
“Even if you’re not an Arsenal fan, I think everyone in that particular moment could relate.
“You need to also protect him along the way, because we have a special talent here – not only for Arsenal but also for English football.
“We need to not go too far too early with what he can achieve.”
