Arsenal’s promising 16-year-old centre-back, Marli Salmon, is primed to go out on loan as he looks to follow the same path to success as William Saliba.
Having made his debut against Club Brugge during this season’s Champions League campaign, Salmon has impressed many behind the scenes at Arsenal.
The youngster also entered the fray at Fratton Park in the third round of the FA Cup against Portsmouth, leaving his mark on the game with a crunching challenge during his 14-minute cameo.
Salmon provided with clear first team pathway despite age
The 16-year-old has been highlighted as one of the academy’s most exciting prospects, with defensive Hale End graduates a rarer sight than those at the opposite end of the pitch.
According to Daily Mail Sport, Arsenal have decided that Salmon will be nurtured in his development much like William Saliba was, with a ‘loan spell or two on the radar’ from next season.
With the demands of men’s football requiring a certain level of physicality and experience, it seems as though Salmon will benefit greatly from playing first-team football before being fully introduced to the first team.
After making two appearances so far this season, the youngster’s impressive stature is evident, with assurance on the ball and defensive determination that is well beyond his years.
Mikel Arteta expressed his delight with the player after his debut, saying:
“He can play as a centre back or as a full back and I’m delighted. He’s so young, 16 still, and he’s playing in the Champions League. So yeah, what a great night for him as well.”
Saliba’s turbulent journey vindicates the value of the loan system
Having joined Arsenal in July 2019, Saliba was initially sent back on loan to his former club, St Etienne.
During a fraught and testing period for the club, the Frenchman was shielded from much of the disappointment endured by players and fans alike during the end of Unai Emery’s reign.
Saliba also spent the 2020-21 season at Nice and the 2021-22 season at Marseille, where he began to showcase his world class potential on a consistent basis.
The last three years of Saliba’s journey have demonstrated the substantial value of sending promising young players on loan, despite Arteta’s choice initially stirring a frenzy amongst fans.
Whilst fellow defender Ayden Heaven departed the Emirates for Manchester United in the summer, there was internal acceptance, largely due to the potential Marli Salmon has shown.

It’s great to see Arsenal investing in their youth, and it’s interesting to compare Marli Salmon’s potential loan spell to William Saliba’s development. This approach could really help Salmon gain valuable experience and grow as a player.scritchyscratchy
