Rogers revenge? Arsenal join Chelsea in race to sign French Premier League star

Arsenal are set to battle Chelsea for the signature of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his back line this summer.

William Saliba’s recent injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined for several months, has forced Arsenal into the transfer market for another central defender. Lacroix has emerged as one of the club’s preferred targets, with the Crystal Palace star viewed as a player capable of stepping into the first team immediately.

The Gunners are expected to face stiff competition, however, with Chelsea already making significant progress behind the scenes.

Chelsea move ahead as talks with Lacroix’s camp progress

Chelsea are currently leading the race for Lacroix after opening discussions with the defender’s representatives.

Reports suggest personal terms have largely been agreed, although the Blues are yet to begin formal negotiations with Crystal Palace. With the Club World Cup now over, Chelsea are expected to step up their pursuit in the coming days.

Crystal Palace are understood to value the French defender at around £55 million and are in no rush to sell following his impressive campaign.

Lacroix was one of Palace’s standout performers last season, playing a crucial role as the club lifted the UEFA Conference League. His pace, physicality and composure on the ball have made him one of the most sought after defenders in the Premier League.

Arsenal are now weighing up whether to enter the race with an official offer before Chelsea complete the deal.

Can Arsenal beat Chelsea to another major target?

Arsenal have every reason to avoid another transfer disappointment at the hands of Chelsea.

Earlier this week, the Blues reportedly hijacked Arsenal’s move for Morgan Rogers after learning he was Arteta’s priority attacking target. It was a familiar story for Arsenal supporters, who also saw Mykhailo Mudryk choose Chelsea before the Gunners eventually signed Leandro Trossard, a move that proved to be an excellent piece of business.

Winning the race for Lacroix would therefore represent more than just an important signing. It would also be a statement of intent.

The French defender recently served as Saliba’s understudy during the World Cup and impressed whenever he was called upon. That experience means he is already familiar with the role Arsenal would expect him to play, even after Saliba returns from injury.

With his strong performances for Crystal Palace and his proven ability to perform on the international stage, Lacroix appears well equipped to strengthen Arsenal’s defence as they prepare to defend their Premier League title and challenge again in Europe.
