Wayne Rooney urges Manchester United to sign one Arsenal player

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged his former club to consider making a move for Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis Skelly.

Rooney’s comments come after reports claimed Manchester United and Chelsea were offered the opportunity to sign the Arsenal academy graduate following the Gunners’ move for Bruno Guimarães.

The possibility of Lewis Skelly leaving the Emirates has raised eyebrows, particularly given his importance to Mikel Arteta’s squad and his ability to operate in both defence and midfield.

What really happened with Myles Lewis Skelly?

Reports emerged around a week ago suggesting Arsenal could be willing to sell Lewis Skelly as the club looked to balance its books following significant spending in the transfer market.

Manchester United and Chelsea were reportedly presented with the opportunity to sign the youngster, but both clubs were said to have rejected the possibility.

The reports immediately divided supporters. Arsenal fans questioned why the club would even consider letting one of their academy products leave, while Chelsea supporters saw him as a potentially valuable addition.

Manchester United fans, meanwhile, questioned the decision not to pursue the deal, particularly because the club need a long term solution at left back and could also benefit from Lewis Skelly’s ability to play in midfield.

However, the rumours appeared to lose momentum after Lewis Skelly scored Arsenal’s only goal in a subsequent game, with Arteta having previously refused to comment on the speculation. He later provided an assist in Arsenal’s game against Manchester City, further highlighting his importance to the team.

What Wayne Rooney said about Lewis Skelly

Speaking on Stick to United, Rooney explained why he believes signing Lewis Skelly would be an obvious decision for Manchester United.

“I don’t think you can rely on Luke Shaw to be consistent for the whole season and that leads me to Myles Lewis-Skelly,” Rooney said.

“We’re hearing that he could be available for not that much money, so I think that’s an absolute no-brainer.

“If you can get a player in who can play left-back and centre-midfield, that’s an absolute no-brainer. He’s young and he’s got a massive future ahead of him.

“I would like to see another centre back, another central midfielder and another centre forward so there’s still a lot of work to be done. But it’s really important that the players they bring in, the club do it right.

“Arsenal have spent a lot over the last couple of years so selling Lewis-Skelly makes some sense as it would be pure profit. I don’t think it would be a great look but I can see why they might sell him.

“If you’re United and he becomes available it’s a no-brainer, they definitely need to bring in a left-back, that’s a priority for United.

“I would like to think there’s more players coming in before the window closes, every fan including me wants to see that. But it’s about getting the right players.

“Looking at the money that has been spent over the last 10 years, it’s been an absolute disaster and the club are probably still recovering from that.”

If Arsenal are really bringing in Bruno Guimarães, then cashing in on an academy graduate makes sense — and Rooney’s spot on that United should be all over it. He’s exactly the kind of homegrown option they’ve been crying out for in that midfield.

If Arsenal are really letting the academy graduate go to balance the books for Guimarães, Rooney’s shout makes sense — United need that kind of energy in midfield. Just hope the club don’t sleep on it like they have with other targets.

Rooney’s right to point at that Arsenal youngster — if United were genuinely offered the chance before the Bruno Guimarães deal, they should’ve moved quicker. An academy graduate with something to prove beats another overpriced signing.

Smart shout from Rooney — if Arsenal land Bruno Guimarães, that academy lad’s route to regular minutes gets even tighter, so United could actually tempt him away. But is he ready to fix their midfield issues right now, or just another project?

Smart shout from Rooney — if Arsenal are ready to cash in on an academy graduate to fund the Bruno Guimarães move, United would be daft not to test their resolve. The lad clearly has talent, and Rooney’s track record with young forwards speaks for itself.

Interesting shout from Rooney — if United were genuinely offered the chance to sign an Arsenal academy graduate while the Gunners chase Bruno Guimarães, they’d be mad not to at least explore it. The kid clearly has talent, and with United’s current midfield options, a young, hungry player could be exactly what they need.

Rooney’s spot on—if Arsenal are making room for Bruno Guimarães, United should be first in line for that academy graduate instead of chasing another overpriced name.

Interesting shout from Rooney — if Arsenal are bringing in Guimarães, that does push this kid further down the pecking order. United could do worse than picking up a homegrown talent who knows the league, especially if the price is right.
