Arsenal predicted XI vs Coventry: Two new signings start as Arteta drops major selection hint

Mikel Arteta has several decisions to make before Arsenal begin their Premier League title defence against newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

The reigning champions head into their opening fixture with confidence after last weekend’s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City, but Arteta must balance momentum with player fitness.

Summer signings Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis are pushing for competitive debuts, while Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are available after returning to the squad.

Guimaraes remains the biggest fitness doubt after picking up a knock against City, although Arteta indicated that the midfielder was “evolving really well”.

David Raya is expected to continue in goal after returning from World Cup duty. The Spaniard will be targeting an opening-day clean sheet.

With Jurrien Timber still unavailable, Ben White should continue at right-back. His display against Manchester City strengthened his case for an extended run.

William Saliba’s injury leaves Cristhian Mosquera with an important role at the start of the campaign. His place could eventually come under pressure from new signing Ezri Konsa.

Gabriel remains a central figure in Arteta’s defence after an outstanding title-winning campaign. His attacking contribution, including seven goal involvements last season, adds another dimension.

Riccardo Calafiori currently appears to have the advantage over Piero Hincapié at left-back, particularly given his attacking influence in the Community Shield.

Martin Ødegaard, the Arsenal captain, impressed during his return to action and will be looking to establish greater influence after an injury-interrupted previous campaign.

Bruno Guimaraes‘ participation is the major selection question. The £75 million signing is dealing with a minor knock but could still make his competitive Arsenal debut after playing 45 minutes against City.

Declan Rice returned from his extended break without complications and remains one of Arteta’s most trusted midfielders. His availability gives Arsenal an important source of energy and control.

Bukayo Saka is another player returning to full fitness, but Arteta has confirmed he is ready to be involved. His starting position will depend on how the manager assesses his condition.

Kai Havertz scored against City and could retain the No.9 role, despite the arrival and growing competition provided by Viktor Gyökeres.

Christos Tzolis has made an immediate impression, registering two assists in the Community Shield. His form has put him ahead of Gabriel Martinelli in the current pecking order.
