Arsenal’s summer transfer window had the football world spinning, but Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand is thoroughly impressed with how Mikel Arteta and company handled their business.
Sure, they waved goodbye to familiar faces like Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Ethan Nwaneri while missing out on blockbuster pipe dreams like Vinicius Junior, Morgan Rogers, and Bradley Barcola. But according to Rio, the Gunners didn’t need a massive, chaotic overhaul to look terrifyingly strong this season.
Hopping onto his Rio Presents YouTube channel, Ferdinand couldn’t hide his admiration for Arsenal’s pragmatic shopping spree.
“I think they’ve strengthened. They look stronger,” Rio declared, tipping his hat to the shrewd additions.
He singled out defensive rock Ezri Konsa as a masterstroke, calling him a “top player, top centre half, reliable, will play many games and will never let me down, I don’t think.”
Meanwhile, he slapped a huge stamp of approval on midfield maestro Bruno Guimaraes, describing him as “a fantastic midfielder who I think is a great signing for them in terms of the mix that they needed, the type of player they needed. I think Bruno is a perfect signing for them.”
Bargain hunting extraordinaire: Is Tzolis the steal of the century?
It wasn’t just the big names that caught Rio’s roving eye. The iconic centre-back-turned-pundit reserved his most glowing prediction for new winger Christos Tzolis, wildly tipping him as a contender for the Premier League’s ultimate value-for-money crown.
While Arsenal avoided breaking the bank on a dozen players, Ferdinand believes they struck pure gold with the Greek forward.
“They didn’t have to go crazy in terms of loads and loads of players, but I think they’ve been really efficient in the way that they’ve gone and bought players in this window,” Ferdinand noted.
Throwing down the gauntlet, Rio added, “Tzolis is going to be a winger; I think we’re going to have to watch out for this year. I think he’s going to do some good stuff, and I think he’s going to look like a snip and maybe could end up being one of the buys of the season. Definitely one of the bargains of the season.”
Neville’s reality check: Time for a timeout against Chelsea?
Not so fast, Rio! While Ferdinand is busy handing out “bargain of the season” awards, fellow pundit Gary Neville is pumping the brakes hard after a reality check against Aston Villa.
Tzolis started his Arsenal career with a bang, turning heads in the Community Shield and against Coventry, but his Monday night outing against Villa proved to be a harsh initiation into the brutal world of English football.
Gary Neville dissected the youngster’s struggles, pointing out how clever full-backs are already decoding his tricks. “Look, it’s early for him. I didn’t get too carried away last week and said I wanted to see a bit more from him.”
Neville explained. “The Community Shield was obviously promising, and then the game against Coventry as well. But I did think he was doing one thing well; he seems to just cut in, and right-backs will start to understand that.”
Matty Cash certainly understood the assignment, handing the new boy a football-boxing match.
“Matty Cash just set about him during the Aston Villa game; he was really aggressive, and it was a little bit of a mauling. That will be good for Tzolis, just making him aware of what this is going to be like,” Neville warned.

With a high-stakes showdown against Chelsea looming large on Sunday, Neville believes Arteta needs to shield his shiny new toy from another beating and hand the keys to a more seasoned star.
“I thought [Eberechi Eze] did really well in the second half; I would be surprised if he doesn’t play next week against Chelsea,” Neville predicted. ‘It’s a big game, and Mikel Arteta might just have to tell Tzolis, “I’m not going to put you into this one, but watch this match.”‘ Eze has a bit more strength about him and certainly more experience in the Premier League. I would be stunned if Eze doesn’t play next week because he played really well in the second half at Aston Villa.”
