Julian Alvarez has addressed speculation surrounding a potential summer move away from the Spanish capital amid links to Arsenal.
Arsenal are set to take a break from Premier League action tomorrow following last weekend’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates.
The Gunners face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano tomorrow night, a fixture which will see Mikel Arteta guide Arsenal through back-to-back semi-final appearances in the competition.
If results go the Gunner’s way, this tie could present Arsenal with the opportunity to begin setting sights on a Champions League final. A feat which would be accomplished for the first time since defeat to Barcelona in 2006.
However, if there’s a player capable of threatening Arsenal’s hopes, it is undoubtedly Atletico Madrid’s top scorer in the Champions League, Julian Alvarez, who’s been linked with a move to the North London side.
Arsenal keen on Julian Alvarez
In recent weeks, Alvarez has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal. Reports claim the Gunners are willing to sell key players in order to accommodate the Argentinian, and it’s easy to see why.
The Atletico Madrid striker has scored 19 goals and registered 9 assists in 47 appearances this season. His impact has been particularly strong in the Champions league, netting a total of 9 goals in 13 games.
Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in August 2024 for a reported fee of £81 million. Since then, he has thrived under Diego Simione, and is at “100% and ready to play” in tomorrow’s semi final.
While he would appear to be an ideal signing to strengthen Arsenal’s attack, Alvarez seems content at his current club.
Alvarez breaks silence on transfer rumours
As relayed by SportsMole, Alvarez is keen to avoid focusing on transfer speculation. Despite growing rumours over a possible summer move, the Atletico Madrid forward insists he is concentrating on the present.
“I try not to give too much importance to what they say, because the truth is that every week new things come out, all kinds of new information, I try not to waste energy on that and focus on what we’re doing here at Atleti.
“I try not to give too much importance to what’s said on the media because it often starts becoming a snowball of lies, I can’t keep going out to clarify or deny everything that comes out all the time.”
While the 26-year-old has yet to make any decision regarding his future, it’s clear that his immediate focus lies elsewhere. The Atletico Madrid forward will aim to finish his season in strong fashion before heading to the World Cup with Argentina this summer.
For now, the chances of prising Alvarez away from Madrid appear slim. However, his long-term future is likely to be come clearer over the coming months.
It may be a boost for Arsenal that Alvarez is clearly not looking to solve his future immediately, as if Arteta’s side lift the Premier League and/or even the Champions League in that time, it could tip a transfer race in their favour over the likes of Barcelona.
