The forwards tore their ACLs during the 2022/23 season (Beth Mead in November and Vivianne Miedema only a month later). This was heartbreaking for so many fans, these players both being powerhouses upfront for the club. However, both Mead and Miedema are making many positive steps in recovery, and we will likely see them grace the pitch again soon.
With an international break coming up, the squads for this month (October) have been announced. Vivianne Miedema was named in the Netherlands squad for their upcoming fixtures against Scotland. This is incredibly exciting as it is likely that Miedema will get her first minutes back since the devastating injury. Hopefully, she will display her usual skill and score some goals for her country demonstrating her ability as one of the most prolific strikers in the world.
Unfortunately, Beth Mead wasn’t named in the Lionesses squad. Sarina Wiegman said that this was because “she first has to build at her club, get that consistency back”, what better place to build this consistency than Arsenal? Mead also got her first minutes since the injury during our game against Aston Villa (Sunday 15th October). Not only that but she heavily contributed to our winning the game, getting an assist for a stellar pass to Alessia Russo in the 94th minute.
Seeing their hard work paying off is incredibly rewarding and both the club and us fans should be proud of how these wonderful players have handled such a difficult injury.
Hopefully, we will be seeing similar updates for our other players who have suffered from the same tear soon, with Leah Williamson showing promising signs as she recently returned to the grass.
