Arsenal women had a relatively quiet transfer window compared to other WSL clubs but that is not to say that it didn’t pass without surprises.
In a move that is perhaps unexpected by some fans club legend Jen Beattie has made a move to NWSL club Bay FC. The club are new to the NWSL and so Beattie is signing on for their first season in the league, her contract will last until the 2025 season with an option to extend to 2026.
Beattie has been a real pillar of the Gunners throughout her time here, earning a staggering 166 caps for the club. She scored 33 goals along the way, many crucial to our success, and was also a wonderful leader in her later seasons, captaining the club numerous times.
Jen faced challenges off the pitch with the club as well, overcoming breast cancer in 2020. She went on to receive BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award, for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. She was also awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List 2023 for services to football and charity.
Beattie has won her fair share of trophies in red: one league title, two FA cups, and three league cups. She was also awarded player of the match in our UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg last season, where she scored in front of a sold-out Emirates Stadium crowd.
Both the club and fans will certainly feel this loss. However, Arsenal have also signed some great players in this window. American international Emily Fox has already proved herself to be a valuable asset, getting the assist in Vivianne Miedema’s first goal since her recovery from an ACL injury last year.
French goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi has also joined the club and while she has yet to make her debut, she is a very experienced keeper named FIFA’s best goalkeeper in 2020. I am sure she will do great things for Arsenal in the short time she is here.
