Arsenal Long Term Target Saga Finally Close to Ultimatum

Arsenal are set to complete the signing of one of the world’s best midfielders, Martin Zubimendi. The 26-year-old had rejected a move to Liverpool last summer and was also heavily linked with Real Madrid—even weeks after he had reached an agreement with the Gunners.

However, all concerns of a late twist have now been alleviated, with David Ornstein reporting this morning that Zubimendi is in London to meet with Arsenal officials for the completion of final formalities and finishing touches to his transfer from Real Sociedad, ahead of an inevitable announcement. It has also been widely reported that Arsenal will pay slightly more than the £51m release clause as part of an agreement with Real Sociedad, who will allow payment in instalments—demonstrating the excellent relationship between the two clubs.

Zubimendi’s arrival has been anticipated for quite some time, and Arsenal fans will likely be relieved by the deal. His wealth of experience in such a crucial part of Mikel Arteta’s system will be extremely valuable, having racked up 236 appearances for Sociedad and also playing a key role for Spain in the absence of Rodri—most notably in the Euro 2024 final, in which he came on at half-time to help his country secure the victory.

Developments in Arsenal’s midfield are likely not over yet, with reports revealing that contract renewal discussions with Thomas Partey are stagnating. As it stands, he is expected to leave Arsenal on June 30th upon the expiry of his contract. Lucien Agoumé is a name currently being strongly linked to join Zubimendi in midfield reinforcements—an area to certainly keep an eye on for the rest of the summer.
