Do or die? How 2025/26 Shapes Up to Be Seminal for Arteta’s Arsenal Project 

As Arsenal’s preparations intensify for next season, renewed optimism finds itself twinned with a sense of grand expectation. The club finds itself at a critical juncture, with fans eagerly awaiting the promise of silverware being delivered next May. 

There can be no doubt that Arsenal’s stature both on and off the pitch has ascended steadily since the club’s winter of discontent in 2019, whereby dismal displays led to widespread fan apathy. Through moulding the playing and coaching staff, re-engaging and reuniting the fanbase, and delivering consistently good performances on the pitch, Mikel Arteta has built up significant credit in the bank with the club’s hierarchy. However, despite this goodwill, it remains to be seen how far the patience of Arsenal fans will run, particularly having witnessed several rivals lift major silverware over recent seasons.  

 Following subsequent second place finishes in 2023 and 2024, an expectation to go further and win major honours certainly emanated from the fanbase as Arteta entered his fifth full season in charge. In the context of this upward trajectory, the 2024/25 season evoked a sense of missed opportunity and disappointment within the fanbase, having finished ten points behind league winners Liverpool. After Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of eventual winners PSG, there has been ample time for much-needed reflection and re-engagement. With a new season bringing this team a fresh opportunity to write their names into Arsenal history, they must seize it in a bid to avoid a legacy of being the perennial nearly men. 

 Incidentally, the imminent arrival of Noni Madueke in a £52 million deal from Chelsea has sent Arsenal fans into a frenzy. As reports of Madueke’s departure from Stamford Bridge were confirmed, videos began to surface online showing vandalism of NorthBanksy’s Arsenal murals along Hornsey Road. This comes against the backdrop of a historically underwhelming flow of surplus Chelsea talent into North London, with William Gallas, Petr Cech, Willian, and Raheem Sterling all failing to capture the hearts of the Arsenal faithful. Despite this, Madueke has evidently enticed Arteta as an interesting marketing opportunity; Bukayo Saka finally receives much needed cover on the right-hand side whilst his wider attacking options are bolstered. With the future of Leandro Trossard up in the air, reinforcing the squad with dynamism and goal threat has been paramount. As Arteta has admitted, a lack of goals and attacking firepower has left Arsenal high and dry at decisive moments during recent seasons. Arsenal fans should embrace the addition of attacking talent such as Madueke, who will bring renewed excitement to the frontline and certainly have a point to prove to his critics. 

 Needless to say, Arsenal and Arteta are under immense pressure to deliver. With last year’s league perfomances giving cause for concern, the club must act to restore fans’ faith and repay the loyalty shown over the course of Arteta’s tenure thus far. With several prominent deals reaching completion, there has been a marked determination by new sporting director, Andrea Berta, to assert the club’s ambition in the transfer market. In addition to the arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi, the acquisition of Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madeueke and Christian Mosquera are set for completion this week. Arteta and Berta have clearly worked hard to ensure that the team is in the best position possible for their season opener at Old Trafford on the 17th of August. With a busy pre-season lying ahead, furnishing the squad early with new recruits will only aid Arsenal’s momentum as they navigate a difficult start to the season. As several teams, including reigning champions Liverpool, display similar ambition in the market, the 2025/26 Premier League season shapes up to be one of the most competitive and enticing yet. Fans will hope this summer will be looked back on as pivotal to Arsenal’s future achievements; it is high time for silverware, success and validation of this team’s obvious quality.
