Mikel Arteta has hailed 15-year-old Max Dowman’s meteoric rise at Arsenal, claiming the teenager’s rapid development and impact at senior level is something he’s ‘never seen before
Arsenal’s incredible academy pipeline is once again making waves, with Mikel Arteta hailing teenage sensation Max Dowman as a player doing something that is simply “unheard of.”
The Gunners have invested heavily in transfers under Arteta, but Hale End continues to deliver gems. At just 15 years old, Dowman is already playing a role in the first team, and his rapid rise has even surprised his own manager.
Max Dowman’s meteoric rise at Arsenal
Dowman has been at the centre of attention in recent months after making his senior debut earlier this season. Since then, the midfielder has featured three times for Arsenal’s first team, showing composure and ability far beyond his years.
Arteta revealed how he first became aware of Dowman, explaining that Per Mertesacker — Arsenal’s academy manager — was the one to flag the youngster’s exceptional talent.
Speaking at his press conference before the Champions League clash with Olympiacos, Arteta said:
“The first conversation was probably with Per [Mertesacker]. We were talking about the talent and what he could see and feel that could reach the level that we needed. Straight away, his name came up.
Then, we started to look at him, and the way he’s developed himself, and the steps that he’s taken, and the speed he’s taken them, it’s probably unheard of.
He’s fully with us, he’s part of us, he trains with us, and he’s got the same chances as anybody else.”
For a 15-year-old to be training regularly with the senior squad and contributing in matches highlights just how highly regarded he is at the Emirates.

Could Max Dowman break a Champions League record?
Arteta already holds the Premier League record for giving a debut to the youngest-ever player when Ethan Nwaneri featured against Brentford in 2022. Now, he could be about to make more history with Dowman.
If the youngster is handed minutes in Europe’s top competition before his birthday in December, he would become the youngest player ever to feature in the Champions League.
Arsenal take on Olympiacos on Wednesday night, and while it remains unclear whether Dowman will play, his presence in the squad itself is testament to his extraordinary progress.
A new Hale End hero in the making
Dowman’s emergence couldn’t come at a better time for Arsenal. With the club competing on multiple fronts, squad depth is vital. Young players capable of stepping up at the highest level give Arteta the flexibility to rotate and still maintain quality.
