Arsenal’s Champions League Identity Under Arteta Faces First Test in Bilbao
Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign at the San Mamés stadium against Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday. For Arteta, it’s a game about showcasing how far his side has come in forging a European identity.
Arteta’s European Plan
Arteta has made the Gunners a European regular. Last campaign, the North London side pulled out the biggest shocker, knocking out European giants Real Madrid in the quarter finals to finally lose to the eventual champions PSG in the semi-final. Arsenal are confident ahead of the tie, coming off a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forrest in the Premier League.

A Difficult Opponent in San Mamés
Athletic Bilbao are back in the Champions League after finishing fourth in La Liga last season. Their domestic start has been high and running, with three wins and one defeat. The recent injury to Nico Williams could be a huge blow for the hosts. However, the Spanish side are confident to pull of a fight, even after last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Alaves.
The San Mamés atmosphere is widely regarded as one of the toughest in Spain, and Arsenal will be tested both physically and mentally.
Bilbao’s manager Valverde, was all praise about the Arsenal boss, saying:
“He is one of the best coaches in the world, for sure. What he is doing at Arsenal proves it.”
“It’s not just about the players he has, but how they play, their attitude, and how they press. They don’t let you play and are consistent in every duel.
“It’s clear that when you face one of the teams that can win the tournament, or the Premier League, you have to be very careful and take your chances. We know what we have in front of us.”

This summer’s recruits have given Arsenal a different energy, with Gyökeres providing the goals, scoring 3 in 4 Premier League games, followed by Eze adding extra creativity and Madueke supplying from the wing. Zubimendi has also found form, scoring 2 goals last weekend, which means Arteta has the best squad depth compared to previous seasons.
The Bigger Picture
For Arsenal, the opening game is all about three points and an opportunity to prove Arteta can compete with the best in Europe. However, this season Arsenal would aim to reach the Final.
