Paul Merson backs Arsenal to sign Dutch World Cup star ahead of Manchester United

Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes his former club should target Dutch star Crysencio Summerville after his display in the World Cup so far.

With the World Cup now in full swing, several players have caught the eye with their performances so far in the tournament.

As Arsenal continue to be linked with attacking additions this summer, transfer speculation is beginning to gather pace.

One player who has certainly impressed so far is Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville. The 24-year-old has registered two goals and one assist in just 115 minutes of football at this year’s tournament.

Despite West Ham’s relegation last season, Summerville was widely viewed as one of the club’s standout performers and looks increasingly likely to leave the Hammers this summer.

Paul Merson urges Arsenal to sign Summerville

Speaking to the Metro, Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged his former club to consider making a move for Crysencio Summerville this summer.

The Dutch winger has recently been linked with Manchester United, but Merson believes Arsenal should also be in the race for his signature, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

Merson has previously questioned Arsenal’s options on the left wing, claiming the Gunners need greater quality in wide areas if they are to take the next step.

“Arsenal, they need a left winger to go to the next level, and they need a centre-forward, in my opinion,” he said.

The former midfielder went on to suggest that Summerville fits the type of profile Arsenal should be targeting, while also naming Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola as another player he would like to see at the Emirates.

“I like Barcola from PSG as well. Martinelli’s done well, and Trossard’s a good footballer, but I just think they need that winger who is going to scare the opposition.

Is Summerville what Arsenal need

West Ham are reportedly demanding a fee in the region of £50 million for Summerville, according to the Metro, a price that feels steep given his return of just five goals and two assists in last season’s campaign.

However, with the possible departures of current left-wing options at the club, that money could be used to bring in a profile like Summerville.

That said, if he ends up being Arsenal’s only major option on the left side, it may leave some fans underwhelmed. After failing to help his side avoid relegation and with no Champions League experience, there are doubts over whether he would be able to make an immediate impact at the highest level despite his strong World Cup form.

Overall, the move feels slightly underwhelming, especially as some of his key traits are already shared with Gabriel Martinelli. For £50 million, some may feel the money could be better spent elsewhere on a more proven, world-class signing.
